"The Best Sip" by Minna Leigh (ER, 492 words, giddy)

Kim stood in front of the refrigerator, rummaging in the freezer for the coffee beans she kept for special occasions and periodic, lazy weekend days. This morning was definitely a special occasion. It hadn't been all that long ago that she'd been convinced Kerry wasn't open to a relationship with a woman, but wow, she'd been more than open last night. Pulling out the container of Jamaican Blue Mountain beans that was buried under bags of frozen vegetables and pints of Cherry Garcia, she giggled as she all but danced over to the coffee grinder she'd already unearthed from the back of a cluttered cabinet. She measured out some beans and dumped them into the machine, remembering just how she and Kerry had ended up in bed the night before.

She hadn't stood on a door step while a good night kiss turned into a prolonged make out session since she was, well, it was entirely possible that she'd never actually done that. Thank God Kerry had finally asked to come in, because Kim didn't know how long she could have gone on pretending that kissing on the tiny porch was all she wanted.

Turning on the machine, she bounced lightly on the balls of her feet, her hips swaying in rough time to the whirring and grinding noises. She started the coffee and got out some bagels and cream cheese. As soon as there was a cup of coffee in the pot, she poured it into her favorite mug, doctoring it with some sugar and the last of the milk, thankful that Kerry took hers black. She flipped on the radio, the frantically cheerful voices for once matching her mood rather than grating on her usual grumpy morning nerves. Leaning back against the counter, she inhaled the aroma of the coffee with her eyes closed, took a sip of the sweet, creamy liquid and let out a sigh. The first sip was always the best. The only thing better was the first sip with the sound of a lover's shower in the background and the memory of the night before sending shivers across her body. And the only thing better than last night was this morning when they'd woken tangled around each other, the warmth of their bodies making it almost too hot under the duvet. There'd been no awkwardness, no second thoughts, no more fear. She laughed with delight and opened her eyes to look down the hallway towards the bathroom as the water shut off. Under the pretext of bringing in towels she'd already gone into the bathroom once just to hear Kerry's voice. Kim shook her head at her barely contained anticipation of seeing Kerry again. She could smell the scent of her shower gel in the air and wiggled with glee as she thought of smelling it on Kerry. She drank the last of her coffee and set down the cup. She was ready for breakfast... for two.
